Steps to Replace a GFCI Outlet

Step 1: Turn Off the Power

Before you start, turn off the power to the circuit you will be working on. Locate the circuit breaker box and switch off the appropriate breaker. Use a voltage tester to confirm that the power is off.

Black (hot) Brass screw or black terminal

Step 5: Install the New Outlet

Gently push the new GFCI outlet back into the electrical box. Secure it in place by screwing it to the box. Replace the faceplate and screw it into place.

Step 6: Test the New Outlet

Turn the power back on by switching the circuit breaker back to the "on" position. Use a voltage tester to confirm that the power is restored. Plug in a device to test the new GFCI outlet. If it's working correctly, the device should receive power.

Press the "test" button on the GFCI outlet to ensure it trips the circuit. The outlet should shut off power to the connected device. Press the "reset" button to restore power.
